BENEFITS OF BONE BROTH

Updated: Apr 30, 2022

WHAT IS BONE BROTH?

Bone broth is made by slowly boiling bones for at least 24-hours in order to extract their collagen, minerals, electrolytes and amino acids. Various types of bones can be used for different nutritional goals. The most common bones used are beef, lamb, pork and chicken.

The quality of the bones determine the nutritional content of your broth. That is why it is better to choose grass-fed and free range meats. If these are not readily available to you, the regular bones will do just fine.

It cannot be simpler to make a bone broth. Here is how you can do it at home.

Ingredients:

  • Your choice of bones

  • Water

  • Splash of apple cider vinegar (to extract minerals)

  • Optional (your favourite keto-friendly vegetables and spices)

Method:

Place all ingredients in a pot and slowly boil over low heat for at least 24-hours. Season with salt and/or sprinkle with your favourite herbs according to taste.

BENEFITS OF BONE BROTH *

Bone broth is high in collagen, which is important for the skin, bones, digestion and connective tissues. Collagen deficiencies can lead to premature skin aging, osteoporosis and joint pains. The glycosaminoglycans in the broth support elastin and collagen, and act as lubricants and shock absorbers in the body.

For people in the process of healing their guts, the easily digestible proteins in the bone broth is beneficial. Check this study 'Effect of Broth & Co’s Beef Bone Broth on lower Gastrointestinal Disturbances: The Bone Broth Gut Study'.

Those on a keto diet will find it especially helpful in overcoming the ‘keto-flu’, when they first embark on the diet.

A good quality bone broth contains:

  • 19 essential and non-essential amino acids including arginine, glutamine, glycine, proline

  • Glycosaminoglycans including glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid

  • Essential vitamins: vitamins A, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, D, K, C0Q10

  • Essential minerals: boron, calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, selenium, silicon, sodium, sulfur, zinc

HOW TO ENJOY BONE BROTH

  • Base for sauces

  • Risottos

  • Asian style noodle soup
